This whimsical tale, based on a short story by Lord Dunsany, has moving undercurrents of loss and grief and in underplaying his role, Peter O'Toole brings a beautiful sense of reconciliation to his character. I will start my story then, on the day on which I became so sure of some astonishing knowledge which Dean Spanley kept to himself, that I decided to act upon my conviction.

2 should have made more waves internationally. The film, released last December, is based on the book My Talks with Dean Spanley by Edward Plunkett, the 18th Baron of Dunsany. Prior to this I had only read Dunsany's, Comic novella about an academic who stumbles on the secret of a dean he knows from the club.
His dogs-eye-view stories are fun, whimsical, and sometimes quite inspirational.

Set in Edwardian England where upper lips are always stiff and men from the Colonies are not entirely to be trusted, Fisk Senior has little time or affection for his son, but when the pair visit an eccentric Indian, they start a strange journey that eventually allows the old man to find his heart.

I am truly sorry that "Dean Spanley" is not available to purchase in Region 1 DVD format: I'd be first in line to buy several copies to give as gifts. I watched this movie for the first time by streaming it on Netflix. After I watched it I knew I had to own it. But it does provide an opportunity for the first of several chance encounters with Dean Spanley (Sam Neill), a peculiar, somewhat mysterious fellow who strongly piques Fisk Jr.s curiosity.
