The double bind theory was developed by anthropologist Gregory Bateson and his research team in Palo Alto, California (1956). Through case studies of female schizophrenic patients, Laing and Esterson (1964) found family life was rife with fear and manipulation. Neglectful behaviours from parents toward their child (such as expecting unattainable perfection, lacking empathy, control, and acting coldly towards the child) impact the relationships of the entire household, and negative behaviours (acting out, emotional reactions) can develop into more severe behaviours seen in schizophrenia further down the line. According to the diathesis-stress model, diatheses interact with stress to bring about mental illness. These positive elements are called protective factors. Double bonds occur in verbal exchanges between two people.
